UU Justice Florida
“A compassionate community is an uncomfortable community! A community that is uncomfortable when anyone is homeless or hungry. Uncomfortable if every child isn’t loved and given rich opportunities to grow and thrive. Uncomfortable when, as a community, we don’t treat our neighbors as we would wish to be treated.”

About UUJF
Unitarian Universalist Justice Florida is a statewide justice ministry for members of 45 Unitarian Universalist congregations in Florida and their social justice committees working in partnership with other interfaith and public interest organizations to promote justice, equity and compassion in public policy.
We focus on a limited number of core issues each year to educate, organize and advocate for policies consistent with and supportive of Unitarian Universalist values. We build coalitions with other like-minded groups to educate ourselves and the public on critical issues of our day and the tools and skills of civic engagement.
Our goal is to realize the dream of a just society, an improved global community and a sustainable earth, starting in Florida.
Vision and Mission
Our Vision is a just and compassionate society, an improved global economy, and a sustainable earth, starting in Florida.
Our Mission is to promote justice, equity and compassion in public policy, guided by our faith tradition and working with public interest groups and interfaith partners who work for the common good.
UU Justice Florida, a 501(c)(3), will be providing many opportunities for learning and discussion for individuals, congregations and beyond. This work may inspire individuals to build relationships with legislators and become partners for change.
Focus and Actions
Indoor Air Quality in the Panhandle
Four years after Cat 5 Hurricane Michael, many homes still have blue tarps on their roofs. These homes, and others in the underserved communities of Glenwood, Millville and St, Andrews (“The Hill”), are still in need of repair.
Outdoor Air Quality in BIPOC Communities of Orlando
Federal, state, county and city highways and streets crisscross BIPOC communities of Orlando, leaving residents concerned about their health. Air Quality Monitoring is a way to determine what pollutants are in the air in concentrations that could impact health.
Building Resilience in BIPOC Communities
The Climate Resilience Ministry is currently engaged in a National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine grant titled, From Resilience to Restoration: Leveraging Houses of Faith to Move the Gulf South. The primary on the grant is Peoples’ Justice Council, a group of theologians engaged in environmental justice work.
Reclaiming Our Power for the Common Good
“A compassionate community is an uncomfortable community! A community that is uncomfortable when anyone is homeless or hungry. Uncomfortable if every child isn’t loved and given rich opportunities to grow and thrive. Uncomfortable when, as a community, we don’t treat our neighbors as we would wish to be treated.”
― Karen Armstrong
Karen Armstrong wrote that decades ago when the modern world was seeing (and sometimes contributing) to the marginalization and sometimes annihilation of entire religions, communities, and tribes, in their home countries.
Alarmed by the human suffering all over the world, Karen Armstrong decided to start a Call to Action inspired by The Golden Rule and fueled by the strongest human loving emotion, Compassion.
The first step is naming what is happening in our country and elsewhere. We must refuse to normalize cruelty and indifference. We must help our neighbors now as we are able and revitalize our governments (local, state and national) by using compassion as our lens for viewing what is happening and what needs to change.
We are at a crossroads. The path of action, though difficult, leads toward justice, dignity, and hope. We need to reclaim our power for the common good by expanding the application of the Golden Rule to individual lives, to our families, to our neighbors, to our organizations and our governments.
Join us in our communities as we affirm and embrace the ethics and principles of the Charter for Compassion (www.CharterforCompassion.org) by making a commitment to embrace a view of health and wellbeing that embraces social empathy. Apply The Golden Rule to all we say and do.
