UUJF supports “compassionate community” initiatives by UU congregations across the state. Compassionate Fort Myers is one such growing movement of neighbors, leaders, and organizations committed to weaving compassion into the fabric of civic life. Through regular Community Conversations, they bring together diverse voices—faith communities, youth, educators, healthcare providers, advocates, and city officials—to imagine and implement practical ways compassion can guide policies, programs, and daily interactions.
At each gathering, participants share stories, identify priority areas, and form action teams focused on issues such as:
- Youth leadership and mentorship
- Food access and environmental healing
- Mental health and healthcare equity
- Affordable housing and racial justice
- Kindness and compassion grants for local initiatives
This work is not just about dialogue—it’s about action. Teams lead developing projects, mobilizing volunteers, and engaging civic leaders to embed compassion into decision-making and community culture.
The vision of community leaders such as those at Compassionate Fort Myers extends beyond their city. By modeling how compassion can be a civic value and organizing principle, we are laying the groundwork for a Compassionate Florida initiative.
Imagine:
- Cities across Florida joining together under the Charter for Compassion
- A statewide council of leaders and advocates sharing resources and strategies
- Compassion-based policies influencing education, healthcare, housing, and environmental stewardship
- A culture of kindness and equity that strengthens resilience in times of crisis
Compassionate communities, such as St. Petersburg, St. Augustine, Orlando, and Fort Myers, are catalysts for this vision. As our local movement grows, we invite other UU congregations to join us in shaping a Florida where compassion is not just an aspiration, but a lived reality.
Join Us.
Together, we can build compassionate communities across the state—and inspire a Compassionate Florida.
